About Lübeck

Lübeck occupies a strategic site on Germany’s Baltic coast where the Trave River meets the Bay of Lübeck.

The city’s Old Town island is framed by the Trave and Wakenitz rivers, with its medieval street plan and brick Gothic buildings recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alongside its historic centre, Lübeck’s coastal area includes Timmendorfer Strand, a summer resort known for its long sandy beaches and ‘healing sea air’ on the Bay of Lübeck. This seaside area developed from former rural settlements and fishing villages merged in 1954, serving as the city’s primary summer coastal destination.
